Arthur Burkard, JD, LLM, CMI Tax Principal

Arthur Burkard is a Principal in Grassi’s Tax Services practice, where he leads a team of professionals dedicated to resolving complex tax controversy and state and local tax (SALT) matters. With a career in tax law spanning more than 30 years, Arthur leverages his tax and legal knowledge to deliver proactive consulting, planning and restructuring services to clients in the construction, financial services, technology and insurance industries.

A member of Grassi’s Construction industry practice, Arthur has expertise in contractual review work, project management and tax audit resolution for contractors and subcontractors. He provides industry-specific guidance to keep his clients in compliance with all federal and state tax laws, including income/franchise, sales and use tax and other indirect taxes.

As a tax attorney, Arthur has successfully resolved hundreds of state tax exams and federal tax controversy matters and has delivered expert opinions on multi-state corporate tax issues and transactions. He is highly skilled in reducing client tax liabilities through exam settlement negotiations, restructuring strategies and M&A due diligence tax analyses.

Prior to joining Grassi, Arthur was a Managing Director in the Tax Controversy practice of a global public accounting firm. His experience also includes nearly 15 years in the Tax departments of Big 4 accounting firms.

Arthur is a frequent speaker on taxation topics for construction and other industry trade associations. He has been admitted to the New York State Bar Association and the Connecticut Bar Association.

Arthur earned his Master of Laws in Taxation from New York University School of Law and his Juris Doctor from New York Law School. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from State University of New York at Buffalo and a CMI – Sales Tax designation from the Institute for Professionals in Taxation.
